Faculty Positions in
Microbial Physiology, Biochemistry and Genetics/Bioinformatics
Rutgers University - School of Environmental and Biological Sciences announces
a cluster hiring initiative in Microbiology and Microbial Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology seeks candidates for three tenure track faculty positions in microbial physiology, biochemistry and genetics/bioinformatics. These three faculty hires will launch a multiyear strategic initiative to enhance a vibrant program in microbiology at Rutgers University. This hiring initiative is designed to expand our on-going strengths in understanding and exploiting the genetic, metabolic and systematic diversity of microbial life on Earth. The new hires are expected to provide an enhanced focus on microbial physiology, biochemistry, metabolic networks and genetics, building on genome-enabled, bioinformatics and “systems biology” approaches, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with members of a number of departmental units and partake in university-wide initiatives in microbiology.
The new faculty hires are expected to expand ongoing programs in the exploration, discovery and application of microbial activities. Research areas of interest may include microbial physiology and the genetic control of microbial metabolism, biochemical mechanisms for the production of secondary metabolites and natural products, bioenergy applications of microbial metabolism, evolutionary microbiology and the biochemical analysis of microbial diversity, metabolic pathway reconstruction from genome/metagenome sequences, metagenome approaches in biochemistry to discover and characterize novel enzymes and proteins, novel molecular and nanotechnology approaches to understanding the roles of microbes in the environment, and microbiology as related to human/animal nutrition and health.
Rutgers and SEBS are a home to a large community of microbiologists, microbial biochemists and geneticists who have established a vibrant and diverse research program in microbiology (See link to Faculty pages). This community includes faculty in the departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, Plant Biology and Pathology, Food Science, and Marine and Coastal Sciences, the Waksman Institute and the Biotechnology Center for Agriculture and the Environment. These faculty have developed an extensive network of collaborations and will welcome participation of the new faculty hires.
The successful candidates are expected to develop vigorous externally-funded research programs and provide excellence in instruction in the Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology curricula and the Graduate Program in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Candidates must have a Ph.D from an accredited institution in a related field and relevant post-doctoral experience. Applications at the Assistant Professor level are sought, but appointment at a higher rank will be considered for qualified candidates
Applications should be submitted to Search Committee Chair Dr. Tamar Barkay, Dept. of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Rutgers University, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 and sent as one attached file (formatted as a PDF file) by email to mmbsearch@aesop.rutgers.edu
Applications should include:
- Letter of interest
- Curriculum vitae
- Detailed statement of research vision
- A statement of teaching philosophy
- Names and contact information for three references
Review of applications will begin October 1, 2008 and continue until positions are filled.
If you have any questions please contact Dr. Tamar Barkay (Search Committee Chair) or Dr. Max Häggblom (Department Chair).
Rutgers is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to diversity.
