•The Biotech Center was created in 1987 at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, jointly by the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology and by the University.  Located in Foran Hall on the Cook College Campus, the Center is an integral part of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES).

•The Biotech Center has internationally recognized research programs in plant biology, animal science, microbiology, and environmental science.  Major government and industry-sponsored biotechnology and genomic research projects address basic and applied issues of interest to the state, national, and international scientific community.

•The Biotech Center is active in a variety of training programs, from formal college and graduate academic degree programs to undergraduate and pre-college research opportunities.  Students enroll through University graduate programs in molecular biosciences, environmental science, and plant biology.  Undergraduates commonly major in the strong Biotechnology curriculum offered at Cook College and carry out independent research projects in faculty laboratories.

•Technology transfer is facilitated through cooperative research programs and interactions with New Jersey’s many agricultural, chemical, environmental, and pharmaceutical corporations.  The Biotech Center’s intellectual property is licensed through the University’s Office of Corporate Liaison and Technology Transfer.

•The Biotech Center benefits from the input of a Science Advisory Board, with broad representation from the scientific, industrial, and academic communities.

•The Biotech Center was initially called the Center for Agricultural Molecular Biology or “AgBiotech.” In November 1997, in order to better reflect the full range of research interests, the name of the Center was changed to the Biotechnology Center for Agriculture and the Environment.
