Brief Description of this Colloquium This colloquium is designed to explore the critical thinking necessary for scientific investigation and for the evaluation of scientific and technical information. The course will focus on understanding the research process, the developmental stages of a research project, data evaluation, and research publications. The class will explore the intellectual road from observation, empiricism, hypothesis, data gathering, and analysis to conclusions. Case studies, using real world examples and practical applications, will illustrate critical thinking and the impact of science and technology on society. Participants in the Colloquium will integrate research information from a variety of fields, such as earth system science, environmental sciences, chemistry, biology, ecology, biochemistry, medicine, social sciences, public policy and economics. |
