Chamelaucium uncinatum

These plants of the Myrtle Family are endigenous to Western Australia, but some are grown in California. The species name uncinatum refers to the hooked ends of the leaves, and 'means hooked at the point'. This flower is commonly used as a filler species providing a refreshing change from gypsohila, and baker fern etc.. The flower is available chiefly from July to November and again from January to May. Some material is imported from Australia. The flowers are ethylene-sensitive and benefit from STS treatment. The delicate small flowers are suited for use in bouquets, nosegays, and corsages. it also serves as a usful covering for floral foams.
Storage
The optimum temperature for this species has not been established
by research. This recommendation was based on results with related
species, the plants origin ,and general observations.
Development at harvest
Half of all buds should be fully open, those closed should be
firm and round with good color.
Lasting qualities
Expect 5 to 10 days depending upon whether flowers were treated
with STS.
Hydration.
Use hydrating solutions if flowers will be placed subsequently
into floral preservative. Do not use hydrating solutions if flowers
are to be placed in water.
Temperatures
For short periods 36 to 38F for longer periods 32 to 34 F.
Consumer care
If properly treated expect 5 to 10 days if kept in preservative
solution. The flower will last several days even out of water
as part of a corsage or bouquet.
Retail handling
Preparation. Ask supplier if flowers have been treated with STS.
One half of all flowers should be open. If flowers have been treated
do not retreat with STS. Examine for botrytis damage during shipment.
Hydration
Place in a hydrating solution only if flowers will then be transferred
to a preservative solution. Hydration prior to preservative treatment
is beneficial especially for imports.
Preservative
Allow flowers 6 to 8 hours in preservative prior to refrigerating
at 40 to 50 F.
Storage
Store in an ethylene free area away from fruits or other ethylene
sources.
