Ornamental composite flowers mostly originating in North America, usually with
large golden flowerheads. Helianthus annuus is the common sunflower which grows
to eight feet in height. Its flowers have brown or black centers which are made
up of seeds containing abundant oils.
Sunflower stems are often heavy and woody. The leaves and stems are hairy and
are often coated with a sticky substance. They bloom mostly from the summer
into the fall.
