1. The required text for the this course is the Flower Council of Holland Cut Flower Guide, obtainable at the bookstore. It will be used as the basis for most of the cut flower identification, along with slides and website images.

2. There will be a Cut Flower Identification Quiz each week 8 quizzes in all, coverning about ten flowers on each quiz. At the end of the course, you should be able to recognize many cut flower species, as well as a few species of foliage used by florists. There will be no make-ups for the I.D. quizzes, but you will be allowed to skip one quiz without penalty.

3. Starting the second session in October the class will begin hands-on training in the construction of various types of floral arrangements.

4. Photos will be taken by the instructor of each of your arrangements each week. They will be used to compile a portfolio that will be submitted and will be used for partial determination of your final grade. Portfolios will be due at Dr. Sacalis' office December 16th. No portfolios will be accepted after that date.

5. There will be no make-ups for the labs missed, but you will be allowed to skip one lab without penalty.

6. The time schedule for Commercial Floral Design is 5th, 6th and 7th periods each Monday, following the Cook College Schedule. In reality, the class will start at 2:15 p.m. and it will continue until our work is completed. The first month, classes will consist of a short series of lectures, introducing you to the florist industry and to some of the concepts of floral design. Quizzes for flower identification will begin at 2:30 p.m. sharp on Mondays. Missed Quizzes may not be made up if you are late, so promptness it urged. During the actual periods of Hands-On work, the class finishing time will vary, with the complexity of the design, but you may usually count on leaving class about 5:00 p.m., give or take a bit.

7. Each student will be supplied with a Victorinox Florist Knife just before the beginning of hands-on labs. Students must remember to bring in their knives for each Hands-on Class. Extra knives will not be available for you if you forget your knife. Don't forget your KNIFE!

8. Each student will be responsible for creating a portfolio of designs, using the photos of their arrangements taken by the instructor. There is a total of seven hands on sessions, but you will be excused from one of them, and so will be expected to have the photos for six (6) Hands-On Sessions in your portfolio. Sample portfolios by students will be shown to you during the semester, to show you what has been submitted in previous years.

9. The breakdown for grade calculation will be as follows:

Midterm Hourly 20%
Final Exam 30%
Final hands-on Design Exam 10%
I. D. quizzes 25%
Portfolio 15%
