| Research in our laboratory covers different areas of environmental and applied microbiology. The main thrust is in the study of biodegradation and biotransformations of xenobiotic compounds and the isolation and characterization of novel bacteria. We are examining diverse aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and microbial communities that degrade or transform environmental pollutants, including chlorinated and brominated aromatic compounds, halogenated pesticides, chlorinated dioxins and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The long term research objectives involve examining the diverse catabolic activities of microbes and how biotransformation and biodegradation affect the fate of anthropogenic contaminants in different environments. The aims of these research projects are to provide a basic understanding of the environmental fate of xenobiotic compounds as well as to serve as a base for developing novel bioremediation or biocatalytic processes. Current research areas include: (click on each project to see description) Characterization
