Trial was established using 14-weeks-old seedlings on December 2002 in a volcanic soil at Chillán (36°32’S; 71°55’W).

Experimental design was randomized blocks with 4 replications. Plots have two rows of plants 5 m long. Distance between rows is 1.5 m and in-row 0.25 m.

Plots were harvested daily during four weeks for the first time in 2004. Number, weight, and diameter of spears were determined after trimming to 18 cm.

The susceptibility of cultivars to purple spot (Stemphylium vesicarium) during the spring was determined by counting and weighed spears affected by the fungus.

Due to the detection of a severe attack of Fusarium spp. during fern growth (February 2005), the survival and health of plants were determined by counting alive and healthy plants (without dead stalks).

2006 Status

Important information on 2006 data

 

By 2005, the Fusarium infection that started earlier (see above) became very severe, causing irreparable damage to the trial and compromising the yield data. Thus, 2005 yield data are not being reported here.

The Fusarium infection did allow for comparison of tolerance/resistance of different hybrids against Fusarium spp as shown in the table below.
