Setting up your AESOP email using Microsoft Outlook Express

Step 1. Open Microsoft Outlook Express and click TOOLS, then ACCOUNTS...

Step 2. If setting up AESOP from scratch, Click on ADD, the MAIL... If editing an existing account, skip ahead to Step 8.

Step 3: Enter the name you want to display when you send an email and click NEXT> to continue.

Step 4
: Enter your email address and click NEXT> to continue.

Step 5
: Choose either POP3 (default) or IMAP. POP3 downloads the messages to your PC and deletes them from the server. This is the standard configuration for users with one PC in one office. If you have a reason to want to keep messages on the server, for instance if you have multiple offices and check mail from multiple computers, you may want to choose IMAP. Consult your local computer support personnel for details.

Enter "pop.aesop.rutgers.edu" or "imap.aesop.rutgers.edu" for the incoming mail server depending on which protocol you are using. Enter "mail.aesop.rutgers.edu" for the outgoing mail server. Click NEXT> to continue.

Step 6. Enter your AESOP username and password. Click NEXT> to continue.

Step 7. Click FINISH to continue.

Step 8. Click PROPERTIES.

Step 9. Make sure the Incoming mail box is set to either pop.aesop.rutgers.edu (for POP3) or imap.aesop.rutgers.edu (for IMAP). Check the box next to MY SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION. This should make the SETTINGS button available. Click the SETTINGS button.

Step 10. Make sure USE SAME SETTINGS AS MY INCOMING MAIL SERVER is selected. If you did NOT save your incoming mail password in STEP 6 (above), you may want to enter it below to eliminate the need to enter a password every time you send an email. The decision is yours. Click OK when finished.

Step 11. You will return to the screen in step 9. Click on ADVANCED tab, check both boxes next to THIS SERVER REQUIRES A SECURE CONNECTION (SSL). The port number next to the incoming server should change automatically to 995 (for POP3) or 993 (for IMAP). For the Outgoing Server, you will need to change the port to 465. Moving the Server Timeout Slider all the way to the right (5 minutes) is also recommended. Click OK when finished.

Step 12. Click CLOSE to finish.

That should be it. If you have any problems, please contact your local computing support personnel or Karl Lindauer at klindauer@aesop.rutgers.edu or by phone at 848/932-4116.
