Setting
up your AESOP email using Mozilla Thunderbird
Step 1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird and click TOOLS, then ACCOUNT SETTINGS...

Step 2: Click on ACCOUNT ACTIONS, and choose ADD MAIL ACCOUNT...

Step 3. Enter YOUR NAME, EMAIL ADDRESS, and PASSWORD in the fields provided. Choose REMEMBER PASSWORD if you wish to save it, leave it unchecked if you prefer to enter your password each time you check email. Choose CONTINUE to proceed.

Step 4. Click the EDIT button.

Step 5: At this point, you need to decide if you want to use POP3 or IMAP. POP3 is what most people use, and it downloads messages locally into your Thunderbird, and deletes them from the server. For most people who check from one computer, this is probably the best option. IMAP keeps messages on the server, and is used mostly by people who check email from multiple computers, so they can see the same messages on both computers.
To use POP3, set the incoming mail server to pop.aesop.rutgers.edu, and set it for POP3, and set it for port 995 and SSL/TLS. To use IMAP, set the incoming mail server to imap.aesop.rutgers.edu, set it for IMAP, port 993 and SSL/TLS.
Make sure the outgoing server is set to mail.aesop.rutgers.edu, port 587, and STARTTLS, regardless of which incoming protocol you choose.
Click RE-TEST CONFIGURATION when done and make sure the tests succeed. If not, correct the information and try again.

Step 6: Click CREATE ACCOUNT if the tests succeed and your account will be created.

Step 7: Click OK and you should be ready to use Thunderbird.

That should be it. If you have any problems, please contact your local
computing support personnel or Karl
Lindauer at klindauer@aesop.rutgers.edu or by phone at 848/932-4116.
