The Department of Plant Biology & Pathology includes approximately 50 faculty
members and 160 staff, post-doctoral and graduate students, and other research,
extension, and teaching personnel. This department is the embodiment of New
Jersey's efforts to develop research, extension, and training in plant-related
areas. It is this department that houses the faculty and other personnel that
support New Jersey's plant industries. It is also the residence of the majority
of the university's plant biologists and plant pathologists. This department has
the responsibility to develop programs that target the plant industry as well as
conduct basic cutting-edge research and teaching programs. The departmental applied
mission comes from our affiliation with the New Jersey
Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) and
School of Environmental and Biological Sciences
(a land grant institution). The department's basic mission is the mission of the
public university that is striving for excellence in research and teaching programs.
Future growth and development of the department must recognize and address the balance
in the missions of the department.
To enhance the impact and relevance of the department we are refocusing our research, teaching, and extension emphases. We intend to build and support sustainable plant industries in New Jersey and pursue excellence in our scientific endeavors. This will involve basic and applied research, extension, and teaching. It is our intention that all programs of the department will address our multiple missions. Through long-term efforts to have impacts in New Jersey and globally, we intend to improve the quality of life and economic outlook for the citizens and plant industries of the state and the world.
