Farm News

Fall crops are underway, as the second succession was planted and the third was seeded. Some of the seedlings planted in our fields have also popped up and will need thinning soon.

Berries! On Wednesday some of the interns took a field trip to one of Rutgers extension farms. There, Dr. Durner let us pick blackberries for you. (We also kidnapped some peaches on the way out.)

Crop of the Week

Tomatillo - the fruit is surrounded by a paper-like husk. The fruit can be any of a number of colors when ripe, including yellow, red, green, or even purple. Tomatillos are the key ingredient in fresh and cooked Latin American green sauces. Fresh ripe tomatillos will keep in the refrigerator for about two weeks. They will keep even longer if the husks are removed and the fruit refrigerated in sealed plastic bags. They may also be frozen whole or sliced.

Zucchini Bread Contest!

While we will be happy to keep accepting baked goods from you, we are no longer taking entries for the Zucchini Bread contest. Please be patient while the interns reflect on the many fine entries we have received, and debate over who shall be the victor!

Cover Crop newsletters are now available on-line; copies of the newsletter will be uploaded each week. If you ever forget to take one home with your share, you can grab a copy here. As an added bonus, the pictures are all in living color!

You can pick up your share on Thursdays from noon until 6 pm, or Fridays from 8 am until noon. Please remember to check off your name on the sign-in sheet.

We also have a post-wall where you can write down any concerns, recipes, haikus, rants, poems, or tall tales you feel the need to share with the world.

Join the CSOF Google discussion group to chat with the interns and the other shareholders, share recipes, etc.
